Missouri Family Honored for Historic Herd
The Historic Angus Herd Award is presented to Angus breeders or immediate families who have been in continuous production of registered Angus cattle for 50 years or more. To honor their dedication to the breed, the American Angus Association® is proud to recognize Double Dye Farms, Shelbina, Mo., as a Historic Angus Herd.
Now in its fifth generation, Double Dye Farms is steeped in family tradition. The herd was founded in the 1940’s when George and Goldie Dye began investing in registered Angus cattle. The first Double Dye herd sire proved to be of superior genetics with his offspring successfully shown across the country by Keith DeVore and Sons of Seymour, Iowa.
Throughout the years, the herd continued to grow and George and Goldie’s sons, Roy and Gary, became heavily involved in the operation. They each became Association members in 1962, and since then have sold cattle through private, purebred consignment and performance sales. Double Dye Farms began their long-held production sale in 1968 near Granville, Mo., where they sold 54 head.
Soon after, Double Dye Farms ownership transferred to Gary and his wife, Alice. Their children, Tonia and G. Kent Dye II, followed in their father’s footsteps and became Association members at an early age. They both received their first heifer calves from Double Dye founders and great-grandparents, George and Goldie. Both children were active in their local 4-H and National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), and were showing by the ages of eight and six. Champions from the showring include Phillips Eva 4, Miss Pro 78, FB Lindsay 169, Double Dye Eva 4 302 and many more.
Today, Kent and his father, Gary, manage the historical Double Dye Farms. Kent is also currently serving on the Missouri Angus Association Board of Directors.
The fifth generation of Double Dye consists of Brett, Luke, Breana and Krista Dye. All four are members of the NJAA, and show keen interest in the Angus breed.
