JBS USA To Help Fund Affordable Housing

As part of its Hometown Strong program, JBS USA says it will invest additional funds to work with local leaders to build new homes and establish revolving funds to stimulate housing construction.

JBS USA is ending contracts with a U.S. company fined for hiring kids to clean meat plants, the unit of Brazilian meatpacker JBS SA said on Monday, adding it is bringing the work in-house at some facilities.

JBS USA announced it will invest $20 million to create affordable housing opportunities in rural communities where it operates as part of its Hometown Strong program. JBS said it will work with local leaders and businesses to build new homes, support team members’ dreams of home ownership, and establish revolving funds to stimulate ongoing housing construction.

Those funds will be targeted at communities across the U.S. and Canada where JBS operates that currently have housing challenges. Communities that will receive the housing investments include: Cactus, Texas; Beardstown, Ill.; Worthington, Minn.; Marshalltown, Iowa; Ottumwa, Iowa; and Brooks, Alberta, Canada.

JBS says it plans to allocate the $20 million by the end of 2021. The funding is on top of $50 million the company dedicated at the launch of the Hometown Strong program in May 2020. JBS said it has funded more than 200 community projects across the U.S. and Canada with those funds.

“Today’s increased investment in Hometown Strong will result in meaningful housing opportunities for our team members and our local communities, making our hometowns stronger, more affordable places to live and work,” JBS USA CEO Andre Nogueira said in a press release.

The company continues to identify new projects with local community partners as part of the initial $50 million program.
