5 Ag Career Trends You Need to Consider in 2023

( Jennifer Shike)

There is no time like the start of a new year to take a pulse on your company’s compensation and human resources (HR) practices to see if they are in line with the outlook and trends for 2023. Here are five things to consider.

1.    Retention is the new attraction.

Retention ranked in the top three among employers asked by AgCareers.com about the most concerning HR matters. Invest resources in retention practices like competitive salaries and providing challenging, meaningful work to your employees to keep them engaged in 2023. Potential talent is more attracted to companies that already have a track record of investing in their employees and have lower voluntary turnover rates.

2.    Graduates are on the radar now more than ever.

Within the next 12 months, 68% of companies surveyed plan to make a greater push toward graduate recruitment. Don’t wait and miss out on this fresh talent; make sure you are invested in college and university recruitment. One of the best ways to attract and retain soon-to-be graduates or new degree holders is to invest in your internship program. Not only can interns help meet staffing needs, but they can also build a pipeline of future talent for your company.

3.    Don’t neglect your company culture.

More than just a buzzword, company culture is a critical aspect of not only retaining employees, but also having positive interactions with those outside of your company. A poor company culture can frustrate employees, spilling into customer relations and impacting the branding of the organization. In a recent social media poll, 42% of respondents stated that a positive work culture is the most important factor they consider when job searching, ranking higher than even salary, flexibility or PTO. Make sure you are working toward creating a positive work culture by providing transparency, communication and support to affirm the value of your employees.

4.    Salary increases remain prevalent.

Due to changes and inflation in the marketplace, a competitive salary is one of the most impactful ways to show employees their talent is recognized. Looking back at the previous 12 months, more than 96% of companies surveyed by AgCareers.com said they had increased salaries, in some cases even higher than previous 2022 budget amounts. Don’t fall behind in 2023. Use compensation tools such as the Compensation Benchmark Review to ensure you’re providing employees a competitive wage within the market.

5.    Invest the time in employees.

“Training and development” was the second most reported factor for keeping staff motivated and challenged. Tying into the retention piece, training and development helps employees to grow their skills while boosting confidence and promoting commitment of the employee while decreasing the chance of turnover.
