Legal problems continue to mount for Missouri farmer Garland Joseph Nelson, 25, of Braymer, who is currently held without bail in connection with the disappearance of Nick and Justin Diemel.

Nelson, 25, was charged in Bourbon County, Kan., this month with five counts of transporting diseased animals across state lines and endangering the food supply. The charges stem from alleged violations on May 1, more than two months before the Diemel brothers came to Caldwell County, MO., to visit Nelson’s farm.

The Diemel brothers went missing July 21 and are presumed dead. Human remains found at Nelson’s farm have not been identified. Nelson was arrested July 26, 2019, for tampering with a rental vehicle after authorities said he drove a truck the brothers rented from his farm to a commuter parking lot, where it was found abandoned.

Previously, Nelson was convicted in 2016 of selling more than 600 head of cattle he didn’t own. He pleaded guilty to cattle fraud that caused more than $262,000 in losses. He was released from prison in March 2018. Nelson also pleaded guilty in August 2015 to two misdemeanor counts of passing bad checks.
