Cattle producers can’t count on the luck of the draw when it comes to reproductive technology— with more investments in estrus synchronization technology and breeding of high-value animals, it is too costly to make a mistake. To get the most out of timed breeding and controlled internal drug release (CIDR) breeding technology, proper dministration of the Eazi- Breed CIDR in the cow is essential, says John Rodgers, a Pfizer Animal Health veterinarian.

Cleanliness is the key, he adds. Wearing protective gloves, cleaning the vulva before insertion and setting up a disinfect wash to be completed between each CIDR placement will keep foreign material from being inserted into the reproductive tract and reduce instances of vaginitis, Rodgers says. The Eazi-Breed CIDRs can be purchased from your local animal health distributor, veterinarian or semen supplier.

Take the right steps. When placing the CIDR into the gun, insert it two-thirds of the way in, folding up the wings as it enters the gun, and add lubrication, he says. Move the animal’s tail to one side and clean the vulva. Insert the applicator at a slight upward angle, moving forward over the pelvic bone until it meets resistance. Then rotate the applicator
so the tail of the CIDR is curling down, which will help hide it from curious pen mates. Dispense the insert as it reaches the cervix by depressing the plunger, then slowly withdraw the applicator body.

Rinsing the applicator in a disinfect wash after each insertion will improve the success rate and keep animals in the best possible health. "It’s important to follow these protocols
as closely as possible for good results," Rodgers says.
