The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is asking USDA for a timeline on the announcement Tuesday about the finding of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in a California dairy cow.
USDA says it is “obviously cooperating” with a request from the CFTC for a timeline of events leading up Tuesday’s annoucement. Cattle futures fell the limit after traders heard rumors of the pending BSE press confernece.
A USDA spokesman said Friday, “I wouldn’t say ‘investigation’ is the right word, but we’re looking into it (how word of the finding got out before the official announcement.)”
