Red meat is being threatened by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee for removal from the center of the plate. Now the beef industry is firing back with a social media campaign called #BeefsOnMyPlate.
Beef producer and current National Cattlemen’s Beef Association president Philip Ellis sat down with AgriTalk to discuss the program.
The goal is for a 1,000 photos to be shared on social media with the hashtag #BeefsOnMyPlate, and directed at the Secretaries of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Health & Human Services.
“We want the Secretaries to realize that lean beef is part of the everyday diet,” Ellis says.
Consumers and producers are encouraged to send pictures of their lean beef whether it be steak, hamburger or any other beef cut across social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. In the post share it specifically with @SecBurwell and @USDA.
“Get it to them so they can see beef is on the plate, it is an important and necessary part of the diet to get the protein we need to function and thrive,” Ellis says.
Many people and organizations have already taken to social media and here is sampling of their posts:
