Greeley, Colorado’s JBS USA meat-packing plant has promised to take steps to prevent animal cruelty after a worker struggled to kill an injured cow.
The Tribune reported Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a notice of intended enforcement earlier this month after an animal tripped and broke a hind leg as cattle were being moved from one pen to another. A plant employee used a .22 rifle to shoot the animal, which then ran wildly, at one point charging toward a supervisor. The animal was shot five more times over a period of five minutes.
JBS told the USDA in two written responses that it would take corrective and preventative steps. Inspectors said they would defer a decision on enforcement pending confirmation the steps have been taken.
