Across the country, pastures are drying up. With more than 44% of the U.S. experiencing moderate to exceptional drought, livestock producers face a daily, grinding struggle to keep their herds hydrated. In North Dakota alone, more than 70% of the state is dealing with drought. Natural water sources are evaporating, leaving behind shallow pools heavily concentrated with toxic dissolved solids and sulfates.
Desperate for solutions, many ranchers have turned to hauling water. But in the rush to save thirsty animals, a seemingly harmless shortcut is turning deadly: reusing old agricultural chemical tanks.
The Dangerous Intersection of Drought and Recycled Tanks
When a pasture’s water source runs dry, finding a vessel to transport fresh water becomes an emergency. It is highly tempting to grab an idle plastic tank sitting in the equipment yard — one that previously held liquid fertilizer or crop pesticides. But that convenience carries a fatal price tag.
“While they may be convenient, using tanks to haul or supplement water that have previously been used to haul fertilizer or pesticides poses a serious poison risk to cattle, sheep and goats,” warns Lacey Quail, North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension livestock management specialist.
The culprit is often right on the label of the crop chemicals those tanks once held.
Minutes to Act: How Urea Overload Shuts Down the Rumen
Urea and nitrogen are foundational ingredients in commercial fertilizers. Under normal conditions, the specialized digestive system of a ruminant animal is a marvel of chemistry. Microbes inside the rumen convert small amounts of ingested urea and nitrogen into ammonia, which the animal then safely utilizes to build proteins.
However, when a thirsty cow drinks water laced with chemical residue, the system is instantly overwhelmed. A sudden surge of urea is converted into a massive spike of ammonia. This excess gas is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, triggering severe, fast-acting toxicity.
“Clinical signs of ammonia toxicosis can occur in as little as 20 minutes postexposure in cattle,” says Dr. Jake Galbreath, NDSU Extension veterinarian.
The progression is terrifying to witness. Affected animals quickly display muscle tremors — particularly visible in their face and ears — alongside abdominal pain, frothy salivation, frequent urination and teeth grinding. As the toxicity attacks the nervous system, animals lose coordination, stumble, suffer violent seizures and lapse into respiratory distress.
Under the influence of the toxin, cattle can become highly agitated and aggressive. Sheep, by contrast, usually appear deeply depressed.
Because the poisoning acts with such devastating speed, time is a luxury producers do not have. Death typically occurs within two hours in cattle and four hours in sheep. Often, the very first symptom a rancher notices is a pasture scattered with dead livestock.
Why Rinsing a Pesticide Tank Is Not Enough
For many producers, the logical solution seems to be a thorough cleaning. They believe a high-pressure wash, steam-cleaning or chemical rinsing will make an old fertilizer or pesticide tank safe for livestock.
Extension specialists warn this is a lethal misconception.
Pesticides and liquid fertilizers chemically bind to the porous plastic walls of agricultural totes and tanks. Over time, and especially under the hot sun, these chemicals slowly leach back out into the clean water filled inside them. Even trace amounts of insecticide residue can trigger catastrophic poisoning, causing severe cholinergic symptoms like watery eyes, uncontrollable salivation and violent diarrhea.
To prevent tragedy, prevention must be absolute. Quail recommends that producers maintain a strict firewall between crop chemicals and livestock water: tanks, buckets, hoses, feed troughs and even loader buckets used for livestock must be kept strictly separate and used only for animals.
If exposure does happen, survival hinges on immediate action. If caught in the earliest stages, “oral tubing of 5% acetic acid (vinegar) and ice-cold water can help slow ammonia absorption,” Galbreath says.
The ice-cold water drops the rumen temperature to slow down chemical reactions, while the vinegar neutralizes the free ammonia.
Where to Find Financial Assistance for Clean Water Systems
No producer should have to risk their herd’s lives because of a lack of safe equipment. Investing in dedicated water infrastructure not only prevents poisoning but builds long-term drought resilience. Rather than risking the use of compromised equipment, producers are urged to look into federal and state emergency relief funds designed to offset the costs of safe water management.
“If you are a livestock producer experiencing shortages of good quality water for your livestock, there are some programs available that provide financial assistance for livestock water hauling and water development,” says Miranda Meehan, NDSU Extension livestock environmental stewardship specialist.
Programs through the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), such as the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP), can help cover the costs of hauling water or installing safe, permanent water pipelines and taps.
In a drought, water is life — but only if the vessel carrying it is completely clean.
