Water: The Drought Plan’s Most Overlooked Line Item

As pastures dry up, Extension specialists say water supply and quality deserve the same planning as feed.

When drought tightens its grip, producers watch the grass first. But water often runs out before forage does — and the consequences hit faster. Access to good-quality water is one of the limiting factors in most grazing systems.

“During drought, this becomes an even greater challenge as water sources become low, creating water shortages and potential for toxicity,” says Miranda Meehan, North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension livestock environmental stewardship specialist.

“Providing adequate, safe water to livestock is critical for animal health and production,” she adds. “A 10% loss of body water is fatal to most species of domestic livestock. Water accounts for more than 98% of all molecules in the body and between 50% and 81% of an animal’s total body weight at maturity.”

How Much Water Do Cattle Need?

The amount of water livestock need depends on the type of animal and stage of production, with requirements often doubling during hot weather. According to NDSU, general estimates of daily water intake for beef cattle when the temperature is 90 F are:

  • Cows: 18 gallons for nursing calves; 15.3 gallons for bred dry cows and heifers
  • Bulls: 20 gallons
  • Growing cattle: 9.5 gallons for a 400-lb. calf; 12.7 gallons for a 600-lb. calf; 15 gallons for an 800-lb. calf
  • Finishing cattle: 14.3 gallons for a 600-lb. calf; 17.4 gallons for an 800-lb. calf; 20.6 gallons for a 1,000-lb. calf; 24 gallons for a 1,200-lb. calf

Travis Meteer, University of Illinois Extension beef specialist, offers a simpler rule of thumb: consumption ranges from 1 gallon per 100 lb. of body weight in cold weather to close to 2 gallons per 100 lb. during summer.

Space at the tank matters as much as volume. Meteer recommends roughly 3 inches of linear water space per head during hot summer months, while dominant animals crowding the tank can leave calves and timid cows short — a reason to build in enough access points for the whole group to drink without a bottleneck.

When Hauling Becomes Necessary

If dugouts, ponds and creeks dry up but forage remains, hauling water can keep cattle grazing longer. Taylor Grussing, South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension cow-calf field specialist, explains the math: for 100 cow-calf pairs averaging 1,500 lb. combined, daily water intake calculates to roughly 3,750 gallons — enough to fill an 8-foot tank six times a day, or run two tanks three times each.

Grussing recommends stationary storage tanks that hold at least half the herd’s daily needs, set up on a gravity-flow float system so water is always available even if deliveries run late. If stationary storage isn’t an option, adding more access points lets multiple tanks fill and get used at once.

She also advises tracking hauling costs — fuel, time, supplies — since the Farm Service Agency may offer emergency cost-share with proper documentation. And before committing to a new source, test it.

Meehan agrees short-term fixes have their place.

“Short-term solutions include hauling water, using temporary pipelines or portable tanks,” she says. “Make sure adequate tank storage is available, and you have clean equipment for hauling water and a reliable water source. While these are short-term fixes, they can get you through a drought.”

Quality Can Matter as Much as Quantity

Dr. Jake Galbreath, NDSU Extension veterinarian, says that water quality affects cattle intake and weight gain. Studies have reported improved gains by as much as a quarter of a pound per day in yearlings and one-third of a lb. per day in calves that drink good-quality water.

As surface water drops, minerals left behind become more concentrated — and that’s where trouble starts.

Galbreath points to total dissolved solids (TDS) and sulfates as the biggest concerns.

“For most classes of grazing livestock, the TDS in the water should be less than 5,000 parts per million,” he says.

Sulfate, part of that TDS reading, should stay under 500 ppm for calves and 1,000 ppm for adult cattle — high levels can tie up dietary copper.

“Elevated levels of sulfates may cause loose stool, and very high levels of sulfate can induce central nervous system problems,” Galbreath explains.

Meteer echoes the threshold: TDS above 5,000 ppm starts hurting intake and average daily gain, and anything more than 10,000 ppm shouldn’t be used at all. He also flags a hot-weather hazard many producers overlook — blue-green algae. Stagnant water exposed to sun during dry, hot conditions is prime territory for algal blooms, some of which produce toxins that can kill cattle within 24 hours of exposure.

Testing doesn’t have to be complicated.

“We point to a couple of tools to aid in monitoring water quality: a hand-held TDS meter and sulfate test strips,” Meehan says. “Both these tools are affordable and easy to use.”

Building Drought Resilience for the Long Haul

Beyond getting through this season, several specialists point to permanent water development — troughs, wells, pipelines — as one of the best investments a ranch can make. Meehan calls it an investment that “gives producers the most bang for the buck,” noting that cost-share is often available through the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and local conservation districts.

Reliable water access pays off beyond drought years, too, by improving grazing distribution as cattle naturally congregate near a good water source — a pattern that, combined with cross-fencing, can expand carrying capacity over time.

“When thinking about water developments, also consider the importance of maintaining an ample supply of good-quality water for cattle during the heat of the summer,” Meehan says. “Heat stress can have major impacts on cattle productivity and can be life-threatening. Evaluate your water supply lines and ensure you have sufficient water pressure and flow capacity to keep troughs full during times of peak water consumption.”

For ranchers who’ve had recurring water-quality issues, Laxmi Prasad, NDSU Extension water engineer, recommends evaluating alternatives now rather than waiting for the next dry spell.

“Establishing a reliable water supply system can help ensure that livestock have access to good-quality water throughout the grazing season, and it can increase a ranch’s drought resilience,” Prasad summarizes.
