BPI Announces More Layoffs
The smear campaign against lean finely textured beef continues to plague Beef Products Inc. (BPI). Earlier this month, the company announced it will permanently close three of its four plants in Amarillo, Texas; Garden City, Kansas; and Waterloo, Iowa, resulting in the loss of 650 jobs, while keeping its plant in Sioux City, South Dakota, operating at reduced capacity.
Yesterday, the company announced it will lay off another 86 employees from its South Dakota corporate office as the result of the the backlash against what the media has deemed as "pink slime," despite the fact that it is a safe, 100% beef product.
Regina Roth, co-founder of BPI, said "This causes very personal heartache for us. We are not some big conglomerate, but a small family-owned business. We personally know and have worked side by side with these people and our family business will never the same with this loss."
