CSU Meat Center Gets Pushback from Animal Rights Activists
Animal rights activists are protesting a small animal harvesting facility that is part of a new $20 million food innovation center set to open on the Colorado State University campus next year.
The Coloradoan reported Wednesday that a member of the school's animal rights club, Becca Bleil, has started an online petition against the facility. The petition has been signed by more than 60,000 people worldwide.
Bleil says harvesting cattle on campus goes against the university's sustainability and carbon-neutral pledge.
The facility will provide space for faculty and staff to slaughter animals. Some carcasses will be used for teaching and research and some of the meat will be sold at a student-run meat market on campus.
College of Agricultural Sciences Dean Ajay Menon says harvesting is necessary to meet the world's growing demand for animal protein.
