The NCBA’s new Succession Planning Learning Module provides a structured, step-by-step guide for families to transition their operations. The free resource includes a comprehensive workbook that helps cattlemen and women build a plan tailored to their unique business needs.

“I’ve been through transition discussions with my kids, and I know it’s not comfortable,” says NCBA President Gene Copenhaver, a former agricultural lender and fifth-generation cattleman. “I hope resources like this make it easier for producers to secure the legacy of their farms and ranches.”
Professor Shannon Ferrell of Oklahoma State University, a leading specialist in estate planning, warns that delaying this process creates unnecessary risks.
“A failure to plan is a plan to fail,” Ferrell explains. “If you don’t plan now, you may end up leaving your family with a burden instead of a gift.”
Ferrell emphasizes that because operations will inevitably undergo transition — either by choice or upon the death of a member — being proactive is the best way to ensure business continuity and reduce family stress.
