Remote drug delivery (RDD) systems — commonly known as dart guns — have grown more popular to treat cattle without the labor of catching and restraining them. But according to Chris Clark, Iowa State University Extension beef specialist, that convenience comes at a cost.
“RDD should be used only when there is no other alternative,” Clark says.
In his view, darting cattle should be reserved for two situations:
- When an animal needs treatment to ensure animal welfare and capture for a traditional injection is impossible; or
- When an escaped, fractious animal can’t be caught through normal handling and needs to be sedated first.
Outside of those scenarios, he argues, the risks outweigh the convenience.
He shares several reasons why guns carry more risk than producers might realize:
Beef safety. Packing plants have reported finding darts and dart components embedded in carcasses — a food-safety issue serious enough, Clark says, to end the debate on its own.
Injury and tissue trauma. Darts aren’t guaranteed to be sterile, and the impact of a dart striking an animal can cause bruising, especially at close range. Because the injection site triangle in the neck is a relatively small target, there’s real risk of hitting the face, eyes, spine or shoulder blade instead. Even a well-placed dart leaves a needle in the tissue that moves with every step the animal takes afterward, raising the odds of a needle break. Research has linked RDD treatment to greater acute stress, muscle damage and injection-site pain than conventional injections.
Treatment without a diagnosis. Darting from a distance often means treating cattle without a hands-on exam, which means producers may be presuming a diagnosis and administering antibiotics that are not correct.
Loss of injection control. With a traditional injection, the person giving the shot can adjust angle and depth, feel whether the needle has reached muscle and even aspirate to confirm they haven’t hit a blood vessel. None of that is possible once a dart is fired.
Inconsistent drug delivery. Studies have shown a meaningful share of RDD discharges fail outright, and even successful hits tend to produce lower blood concentrations of the drug and faster drug clearance than a conventional injection. This increases the risk of poor efficacy and antimicrobial resistance.
Spent darts left in the field. Darts are designed to fall off after roughly an hour but tracking them down — especially in rough terrain or tall grass — takes patience. Left uncollected, they pose a needle-stick risk to animals and people, and can even be ingested, leading to hardware disease.
Missing the target. Even under controlled conditions, accuracy isn’t guaranteed. In one study, Clark says a third of the darts fired at trained, restrained calves from 30 feet still missed the injection site triangle.
Dosing mismatches. Darts are built to be filled completely, which can tempt producers to add filler when the correct dose is smaller than the dart’s capacity — a move that’s both illegal compounding and a potential threat to drug efficacy.
No labeled drugs for RDD. No animal drugs are FDA-labeled specifically for dart administration. Any use falls under extra-label drug use rules, requiring a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship and written directions from the attending veterinarian. He adds, some drug classes can’t legally be used this way at all.
Best Management Practices
“When possible, capture and restrain animals to administer conventional injections,” Clark summarizes.
When there’s no other option, he outlines a detailed list of practices to reduce risk when using RDD systems:
- Complete firearm safety training and device-specific training from the manufacturer before ever using an RDD system.
- Follow standard gun safety rules — safety on until ready to fire, muzzle pointed in a safe direction, awareness of surroundings.
- Use only the charges and darts designed for the specific device, and match distance to the recommended charge.
- Work with a veterinarian to establish a presumptive diagnosis and confirm RDD is an appropriate route.
- Follow Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) guidelines for every injection, darted or not.
- Aim only for the injection site triangle of the neck and confirm distance and angle before firing.
- Only dart animals that are standing still.
- Estimate weight as accurately as possible to avoid under- or overdosing.
- Use the lowest power charge that will still get the dart to the animal.
- Collect every spent dart to confirm delivery and prevent injury.
- Match drug volume to dart size — never mix drugs in a dart or add liquid filler.
- Reserve RDD for treating immediate health issues, not routine work like vaccinations.
- Favor sterile, disposable darts when possible; if reusing darts, clean and sanitize thoroughly between uses with boiling water.
- Never dart a drug that’s dangerous to humans or animals. Clark specifically flags tilmicosin (Micotil) as a drug that should never be given by RDD.
- Stick strictly to the drug’s labeled route of administration — flunixin meglumine, for example, is labeled for IV use only and should never be darted.
- Use no more than one dart per treatment, and no more than 10 cc per dart or injection site.
- Maintain the RDD device according to manufacturer instructions.
- Use short, large-diameter needles (½ to ¾ inch, 16 gauge or larger) to limit tissue damage, and avoid burred needles when possible.
- Keep a range of charges and darts on hand for different drugs, doses and distances, so there’s no temptation to improvise.
