Hulett: More of the Same

Packer needs for cattle appeared to be limited last week, yet prices paid in all regions held relatively steady with the previous week.

Packers’ need for fat cattle continued to be very slim. With the lack of need for cattle packers continued to keep the market supported with bids of $119-$120 on limited numbers in the South.

Feeders in the North saw more of the same in their trade, too. Packers were willing to buy cattle live in the range of $119 to $123 and dressed cattle mostly in the upper $180’s to low $190’s.

The independent cattle feeder continues to struggle to find a shackle for their cattle. This seems to be one of the biggest problems in the industry today. The packer can have all the regulations in the world put upon them, but as long as the majority of our industry freely gives the packer all their inventory, nothing in price discovery will ever change.
