High heat and humidity in parts of Kansas has killed more than 2,000 head of cattle.

"The heat is being tough on those plains cattle," says Julianne Johnston, Pro Farmer Senior Markets Editor. "But milder conditions are expected by the weekend. The combination of beef market strength and weather is helping to propel the rally and should result in $1 to $2 higher cash cattle trade, possibly today."

Not only is the heat affecting cattle numers, it iwll also impede rats of gains in a large part of cattle feeding country, which could impact beef tonnage later on. While the loss of cattle is a financial hardship for producers, the slowdown in weight gains in the surviving cattle can often have a greater impact on cattle markets.
