Wet Conditions and Hot Weather Spark Foot Rot Concerns for Cattle Producers

Don’t let lameness stall herd performance. Simple environmental tweaks and proper mineral programs can keep foot rot at bay this summer.

As summer temperatures soar, cattle seeking relief in ponds and muddy pastures face an invisible threat: foot rot. Wet pastures, muddy pond banks and standing water create the perfect breeding ground for lameness-causing bacteria.

“With hot weather in full swing and cattle standing in ponds and streams, producers should watch for foot rot,” says Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist.

Left unchecked, foot rot can severely limit herd mobility, reduce weight gain, lower milk production and drive up treatment costs. Fortunately, proactive environmental management and a solid treatment plan can protect both the herd’s health and a producer’s bottom line.

What Causes Foot Rot in Cattle?

Foot rot is a highly infectious skin and hoof disease characterized by severe inflammation of the interdigital tissue. It occurs when pathogens breach the natural barrier of the hoof.

“Fusobacterium necrophorum enters damaged skin and hoof tissue between the claws and works with other bacteria, including Porphyromonas levii, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Trueperella pyogenes, to cause infections that lead to foot rot,” Davis explains.

Prevotella intermedia can also contribute to the severity of the disease.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Foot Rot?

Producers should regularly monitor their herds for early clinical signs of infection, which include:

  • Sudden, severe lameness or favoring of a limb.
  • Symmetrical swelling and redness of the interdigital tissue (between the toes) and the surrounding coronary band.
  • Necrotic (decaying) lesions that emit a distinct, foul odor.
  • A noticeable reduction in appetite, milk production and overall weight gain.

If treatment is delayed, the infection can migrate deeper into the joint, causing extreme swelling around both digits and potentially separating the hoof claw.

Why Is There Increased Foot Rot Incidence During the Summer?

Understanding what triggers outbreaks is the first step in prevention.

“Factors that contribute to foot rot include moisture, injury, disease and nutrient deficiencies,” Davis explains.

During hot summers, cattle frequently seek out ponds, streams and muddy areas to cool off. This behavior is often exacerbated by fescue toxicosis — a condition common in Missouri pastures that impairs a cow’s ability to regulate body temperature, forcing it into water sources for relief. Constant exposure to mud and water softens the hoof tissue, making it highly susceptible to abrasions from rocks, gravel and rough terrain.

Three Proven Foot Rot Prevention Strategies

To reduce the incidence of foot rot, Davis encourages producers to focus on three preventive pillars:

  1. Manage the Environment
    • Limit Water Exposure: Keep cattle away from standing water by fencing off farm ponds, mud holes and streams.
    • Provide Adequate Shade: Mitigating heat stress with artificial or natural shade reduces the herd’s urge to stand in wet areas.
    • Manage Fescue Toxicosis: Implement pasture management strategies to reduce fescue endophyte exposure, helping cattle stay cooler naturally.
  2. Provide Balanced Nutrition Program
    Trace minerals such as zinc, selenium and copper help maintain skin and hoof wall integrity. Deficiencies may increase the risk of foot rot, so cattle producers should offer a sound nutrition program with free-choice access to these trace minerals.
  3. Proper Hoof Care
    Select structurally sound animals to reduce foot problems. Foot scoring can help evaluate soundness by assessing claw set and foot angle, including pastern and heel length. Evaluate the herd regularly and cull animals that fall outside these guidelines. Also, limit time on abrasive or sharp surfaces such as rocks, gravel and concrete to reduce hoof irritation that can lead to foot rot.

How to Treat Foot Rot in Cattle

When prevention fails, quick intervention is crucial to limit permanent joint damage and minimize performance losses.

“Have a treatment plan in place if lameness occurs,” Davis advises.

Treat foot rot promptly to reduce hoof damage and performance losses. Veterinarians can help identify symptoms, develop treatment plans and guide implementation.

He suggests producers consider the following when dealing with foot rot:

  • Treatment. Injectable and feed antibiotics, such as oxytetracyclines, can help treat foot rot. These require veterinary approval, so work with a veterinarian and use as directed. Clean the foot and apply a topical antimicrobial treatment as directed by your veterinarian.
  • Hoof trimming. In severe cases, hoof trimming may be needed to reshape the hoof and remove necrotic tissue to support healing. A veterinarian or trained professional should perform this procedure.
  • Isolation and recovery. Isolate the animal in a clean, dry pen to support healing and help prevent disease spread. A veterinarian may recommend pain relief. Improvement should appear within three to four days; if not, consult your veterinarian for further treatment. Animals with recurring foot rot should be culled.
