One Closed Gate, 14 Dead Cattle: The Costly Consequence of a Missed Detail

Kansas state veterinarians investigated the sudden deaths of 14 cattle and discovered the cause wasn’t disease; it was preventable management oversight.

Fourteen seemingly healthy cattle died within hours. Timing raised immediate questions about the possible causes: vaccination reactions, toxic plants or disease. As veterinarians sorted through evidence, they discovered the answer wasn’t hidden in a laboratory test; it was in the pasture.

In an episode of “Bovine Science with BCI,” Kansas State University Veterinarians, Dr. Brad White and Dr. Scott Fritz, reviewed a management oversight made during fall processing.

A Routine Processing Day Takes a Tragic Turn

What began as a routine processing day in August turned tragic hours later. The cattle received pour-on parasite treatment, while the calves received their pre-weaning vaccinations, including a five-way modified-live viral vaccination and seven-way clostridial vaccination.

“With a pour-on only, the only thing I can think of is: Do I have an incorrect dose? Do I have something going on? How often do you see things like an organophosphate or a pyrethroid? And would that happen this quickly? If I had an extreme overdose, could I even overdose enough?” White asks.

White emphasizes that losing this many cattle within hours of processing is extremely unusual. When veterinarians arrived at the facility, they noticed the deceased cattle spread throughout the 40-acre pasture. The surviving cattle were huddled beneath the pasture’s only tree, displaying unusually aggressive behavior.

“Then the veterinarian noticed that at least the adult cows were very gaunted — sucked up in the abdomen,” Fritz adds.

Veterinarians initially focused on laboratory testing, investigating possibilities such as pour-on overdose, toxic plants and other potential toxins. Despite extensive testing, every result came back normal.

Ruling Out the Usual Suspects

Because toxicology screens, vaccine reactions and infectious disease tests all failed to explain the sudden losses and were left searching for another explanation.

“Something’s not adding up,” White explains, noting he was struggling to connect the deaths to them being processed just a few days prior.

With little evidence from the tests, the veterinarians shifted their attention back to the pasture focusing on surviving cattle behavior and overlooked details.

The Missing Piece

Re-evaluating the pasture, veterinarians shifted their focus to the cattle’s environment and soon realized a crucial detail — the herd no longer had access to water. During processing, a gate had been closed to move cattle through the chute and was never reopened, blocking access to the only functioning automatic waterer.

“Water’s running fine, but the challenge was the fence to get there was shut because the processing, they had to shut it to catch the cattle in a certain way, let them out the other side of the building, [and] didn’t open that gate back up to give them access to the automatic waterer,” Fritz says.

The discovery explains why laboratory tests had failed to identify a disease or toxic exposure. Instead, the cattle had become severely dehydrated after processing, and brain sodium concentrations later confirmed water deprivation as the cause of death.

Fritz explains how dehydration affects the brain: “That’s really what happens when those animals get really dehydrated. The sodium kind of diffuses into the brain passively. When you get too much sodium in the brain, it interrupts the way that pump works.”

A Preventable Lesson

Combined with August heat, the lack of water access quickly turned a routine processing day into a preventable tragedy. Producers can reduce the risk of similar losses by walking pastures after processing, confirming gates are reopened and verifying cattle have access to a reliable water source.

While disease and toxic exposures are often the first suspects when cattle die unexpectedly, this case serves as a reminder that some of the most devastating losses can result from the smallest management oversight.
