JBS USA has announced a major operational pivot for its facility in Souderton, Pa. Originally scheduled for a complete shutdown, the facility will be transformed into a dedicated value-added and case-ready packaging operation.
Through a $30 million investment over the next 10 years, JBS USA will preserve approximately 400 jobs and modernize the plant to serve key retail markets across the Northeast.
What is Changing at the JBS Souderton facility?
As announced in June, JBS USA will conclude all beef harvesting and raw processing operations at the Souderton site on Aug 14. Following this date, the company will transition the facility to focus on case-ready packaging. The announcement explains, over the next decade JBS will invest more than $30 million to install modern, case-ready packaging lines. This transition will allow the plant to receive bulk proteins and package them into retail-ready products for grocery store shelves.
This transition preserves 400 family-sustaining jobs in Montgomery County. While this is down from the plant’s original beef processing headcount of roughly 1,500, the agreement successfully prevents a total economic shutdown of one of the region’s oldest agricultural anchors.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro says, “Pennsylvania’s agriculture and manufacturing industries have powered our economy for generations, and we’re making sure they continue to drive our future. My administration is working to protect good-paying jobs — and this facility will remain an important economic driver for Montgomery County. We were proud to work alongside JBS, UFCW and community leaders to support Pennsylvania farmers, strengthen our food supply chain, and support JBS’s continued investment in the Commonwealth.”
The turnaround is the result of extensive collaboration between JBS USA, Gov. Shapiro, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the state’s economic development team at BusinessPA, and UFCW Local 1776 union leadership.
