Cattles experts say weaning calves at an early age may help beef cows worn thin by the hard winter.

Tom Troxel with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture says the long winter meant spring calving cows are not in ideal body condition.

Weaning the calf early may reduce the cow’s nutritional requirement. This will make it easier to maintain or build body composition.

Shane Gadberry with the UA Division of Agriculture says once a calf is weaned earlier, cattle producers can either sell the calf immediately or background the calf until normal weaning.
