Montana Hereford Feeder Calf Sale Success Continues
Buyers paid up for Hereford-influenced feeder calves at the 6th Annual Montana Hereford Influenced Feeder Calf Sale Nov. 19 at the Headwaters Livestock Auction Yard in There Forks, Mont. More than 1,000 head sold in the sale for a total revenue of $1.54 million, making the average price per head $1,536.
When compared to the auction market’s “premier feeder calf sale” that same afternoon, the Hereford influenced steers sold higher in 10 of the 12 weight groups. The Hereford-influenced steers ranged from $5.73 to $17.99 per hundredweight (cwt.) higher. The Hereford-influenced heifers also outsold the others in nearly all weight groups. They sold for more than $1.02 to $8.38 per cwt. higher.
Six of the loads purchased were bought by Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) cooperating feedots.
In order to be eligible for the sale, organized by the Montana Hereford Association, the calves were required to be at least 50% Hereford, with the other 50% being of British breeding, dehorned and castrated. Producers were encouraged to have them weaned for 45 days, with appropriate vaccination and deworming programs, as well as age and source verification.
Prior to the sale, Nick Campbell of Zoetis sponsored a social for buyers and sellers.
