      <title>FBN Spins Out Its Crop Protection Business, Focuses on Marketplace and Technology</title>

        Last week, just a few hours after Corteva announced its spin out dividing seeds from crop protection, Farmers Business Network (FBN) announced it is separating its businesses. Moving forward FBN will focus on its digital marketplace for farmers, and the newly launched Global Crop Solutions will be an independent supplier of crop protection products.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;FBN leaders say the timing is coincidental. Their motive for the timing was brought about by the new fiscal year. But they offer both of the announcements together could be a sign of a trend of vertical integration getting unwound in the name of efficiency and focus.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We’re doubling down, allotting capital on digital innovation for FBN’s future,” says Diego Casanello, CEO of FBN. “FBN’s core business is a digital commerce and fintech platform. We want farmers to be able to buy, finance, and market everything they need while sitting in their combines. These are technology challenges, so the core competence you need to be successful at FBN is different from managing the supply chain of the crop protection business.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In the past 14 months, FBN has been refocusing its business. First, it spun off its insurance business, then its Gradable business into a joint-venture with ADM. Now with its crop protection business spin out, Casanello says the FBN marketplace will feature GCS products, such as Willowood USA branded products, via a strategic partnership, and GCS products will explore distribution beyond the FBN marketplace.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The big unlock for GCS is the opportunity to serve the entire retail and co-op industry,” Casanello says. “It frees GCS of any channel conflicts and hits the ground running with one of the largest portfolios of products in the industry. And it frees FBN from similar constraints as we move to an open marketplace architecture. We are onboarding new sellers and their portfolios every week. We provide them the tools to manage pricing, marketing, and placement. FBN is open for business and we’ve had significant interest from additional partners before and after the announcement.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;FBN’s Marketplace Strategy&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Currently, FBN says it has 120,000 farmer members in the U.S. and Canada. The business provides a marketplace with farm inputs and supplies, financial services and data-driven intelligence.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;FBN co-founder Charles Baron says the FBN marketplace has expanded its product range to include crop protection, seed (with additional partner news coming soon), fertilizer, livestock products, veterinary pharmaceuticals, farm supplies and more.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“To farmers, there’s no change in their experience. And over time, we’ll bring an even broader assortment of goods,” Baron says. “You’ll be seeing announcements from us every two weeks or so about the suppliers coming on the platform. It’s one of the most exciting times in our history.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The leaders say farmer use of e-commerce has increased every year since they launched, and in 2025 FBN served a record number of customers. “Farmers are really focusing on value right now and maximizing every dollar,” said Baron. And per their analytics roughly 35% of U.S. farmers visit FBN.com to browse inputs, apply for financing, or look for information.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Future of GCS&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As a newly formed independent crop protection supplier, GCS has a portfolio of 250 registrations on post-patent products. The company will specialize in sourcing, managing first mile logistics, developing new products and regulatory aspects.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;To lead the business and its team, Amy Yoder, most recently EVP of FBN’s livestock division, is incoming CEO.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Global Crop Solutions launches today as an independent powerhouse,” said Yoder, in a press release. “For the first time, our extensive portfolio and efficient global supply chain are fully available to all partners— from retailers, to distributors, to co-ops. Our independence unlocks immense growth potential and allows us to be the most reliable and collaborative partner to the entire agricultural industry.”&lt;br&gt;

      <title>Right To Repair Granted? John Deere Launches Digital Self-Repair Tool for $195 Per Tractor</title>

        , the equipment manufacturer has released an updated digital service tool to enable equipment owners to maintain, diagnose, repair and protect farm equipment.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The new Operations Center PRO Service tool is available now in John Deere’s Operation Center app to equipment owners in the U.S. and Canada. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;John Deere says it will charge farmers an annual license starting at $195 per machine for the tool. The company is charging independent service professionals $5,995.00 per year, which includes up to 10 local downloads. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The increased functionality of the new service tool replaces John Deere’s previous digital service iteration, known as Customer Service ADVISOR. John Deere representatives confirm ADVISOR will be phased out over the next year.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;What farmers need to know&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        John Deere says the new Operations Center PRO Service “delivers digital repair content filtered by year and model number and provides users with additional relevant machine information to help troubleshoot, diagnose and repair Deere equipment. John Deere&lt;/i&gt; Right to Repair lawsuit, you may recall FCC’s legal team asking the equipment manufacturer to release a full digital repair and diagnosis tool for farmers and independent service technicians as part of its filed request for injunctive relief.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;Right to Repair advocates and antitrust attorney James Kovac, along with the FCC’s legal team, at the time were critical of the Customer Service ADVISOR, calling it an incomplete diagnostic tool. Kovacs himself says “independent repair pros and the farmers have access to (the tool), but (it) doesn’t give them the full suite of options to repair all the needs of their farming equipment.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;h3&gt;How does it work?&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        Equipment owners must access Operations Center PRO Service through the John Deere Operations Center. Once connected to the platform, owners will add their equipment into their account using the machine’s serial number. Use of an electronic data link might be required for more advanced features within Operations Center PRO Service, including software reprogramming. Certain interactive tests, calibrations and reprogramming limitations will exist at initial release. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;John Deere says it will deliver additional capabilities in future updates.         IntelliSense Bale Automation is an automated baling system that focuses on feedrate and swath guidance by combining two operator-assisted baling modes:&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;SmartSteer swath guidance acts as autosteering for automated navigation of the tractor and baler along the windrow. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;IntelliCruise II controls tractor speed, responding to variation in material feedrate into the baler.         WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden wants the Federal Trade Commission to limit the ability of farm equipment manufacturers to restrict tractor owners from using independent repair shops or complete some repairs on their own, a source briefed on the matter told Reuters Tuesday.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Biden’s planned executive order on competition, expected to be released in the coming days, will encourage the FTC to address the issue, the source said. Some tractor manufacturers like Deere &amp;amp; Co use proprietary repair tools and software to prevent third parties from performing some repairs. Deere and the FTC did not immediately comment.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The FTC wrote a report for Congress in May that discussed “Right to Repair,” which addresses the issue of limits that manufacturers put on who can repair items ranging from mobile phones to home appliances to cars. Those limits may also raise the price of those repairs.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The source noted the scope of any “Right to Repair” rules would be set by the FTC.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Biden separately plans to direct the U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA) to write a series of rules to increase competition in agricultural industries, including one under the Packers and Stockyards Act making it easier for farmers to bring claims and adopt anti-retaliation protections for farmers who raise concerns about bad practices, the source said.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Biden will also direct USDA to issue new rules defining when meat can bear “Product of USA” labels. Under current labeling rules, meat can be labeled “Product of USA” if it processed in the United States —including when meat is raised overseas and then processed into cuts of meat at a U.S. facility. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Biden’s sweeping competition order will address issues across the economy, from directing new rules on delayed airline baggage to even addressing Department of Defense contracts and cell phones, the source told Reuters. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The FTC said that repairs were frequently limited by product design that makes repairs more difficult or less safe, disparagement of parts not made by the original manufacturer and license agreements.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The source said Biden and USDA “believe farmers should have the right to repair their own equipment how they like.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Jahmy Hindman, chief technology officer at John Deere, told the Verge in an interview last month that “98% of the repairs that customers want to do on John Deere products today, they can do.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He defended the decision to restrict repairs related to software, saying if owners modified diesel engine software it could impact emissions or other changes that could impact safety.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Do you really want a tractor going down the road with software on it that has been modified for steering or modified for braking in some way that might have a consequence that nobody thought of?”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;There is also a bill before Congress, the Fair Repair Act, which would allow the FTC to penalize companies which block consumers from repairing products by limiting access to replacement parts.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;(Reporting by David Shepardson and Diane BartzEditing by Chizu Nomiyama)&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

      <title>Drone Wars: Agriculture Caught In The Middle Of Global Tension</title>

        If you are in agriculture and the latest high-tech drone is on your Christmas list, then you might want to ask Santa for something else before it’s too late. One of the largest consumer drone manufacturers is on the naughty list.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;No, it is not Santa’s naughty list, but instead, it’s the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) naughty list.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The company in question is Chinese drone maker DJI. In 2022, the DoD added DJI to its list of Chinese military companies (CMCs). After a delisting petition from DJI in July 2023, DoD ultimately responded by redesignating the drone company as a CMC in January 2024.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This growing crackdown on Chinese technology companies stems from U.S. government agencies implementing key provisions of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, which Congress passed to help fight espionage enabled by foreign technology companies. The U.S. Treasury and Commerce departments also have DJI on their own blacklists.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The news got much worse for DJI in September as the House of Representatives passed the Countering CCP Drones Act. The legislation would essentially place a domestic ban on DJI devices by prohibiting them from operating on U.S. communications infrastructure. It is doubtful a final verdict on DJI’s fate in the U.S. will be rendered until a new Congress and administration begin work in 2025, but if passed, then it could ground all DJI drones within the U.S.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Caught in the Middle&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;Due to the immense market share DJI has in the U.S., the impact could be quite disruptive, especially in the short term. Several U.S. agriculture drone service companies that have been built on the backs of DJI’s technology could soon have their wings clipped if the ban becomes reality.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It has been more than a decade since commercially affordable drone technology landed on farms all across this country. The initial value proposition drones brought to the table was both intriguing and mesmerizing. Finally, you could visualize and analyze your crops, land and assets in ways that were more in-depth and instantaneous than ever before. Plus, you’ve got to admit that flying a drone around your corn field is a lot more fun than cleaning out a grain bin or bucking hay bales.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As it relates to agriculture, the drone industry has seen incredible advancements in technology and application since drones first took flight. In the early days, a modified pocket camera from Best Buy and suspect Russian imaging software were needed to make the whole process work. Today’s drones are available with all kinds of bells and whistles ranging from standard 4K resolution to thermal imaging and even lidar mapping sensors. Thousands of images from hundreds of drones are now processed in the cloud by companies such as Pix4D and DroneDeploy. Meanwhile, companies such as Rantizo and Guardian Agriculture offer specialized drone spraying services for ag retailers and producers. Progress for sure. Game-changing? Not quite.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Last Year’s Forgotten Toy&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;After more than a decade, it seems agricultural adoption of drone technology has hit a virtual ceiling and is stuck in a holding pattern over some corn field in Iowa. The acceptance and integration just haven’t happened at the same pace compared with how agriculture has responded to other innovations such as auto-steer, yield monitoring or variable-rate spraying.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The obvious question is: “Why aren’t drones and drone-related services further along by now?”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;When answering that question, one could quickly run out of fingers to point the blame. It is easy to point first at the government, specifically the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Given its rules, you still cannot fly a drone higher than 400', it still can’t weigh more than 55 lb., and you still can’t let it out of your sight.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Foreign drone companies, especially DJI, have exploited FAA’s 55-lb. weight limit to the detriment of the industry’s advancement. By flooding the market with cheap technology, DJI was able to push out much of the manufacturing competition in this arena. In turn, and probably by design, that meant any complementary technology and software that U.S.-based companies wanted to develop had to be done with DJI setting the rules and protocols. This alone should give one pause as China isn’t afraid of simply coopting such ideas and calling them its own.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Data from Purdue University’s annual precision agriculture dealership survey lays out a damning verdict when it comes to the adoption and economic sustainability of current drone tech. The 2024 study showed only 27% of ag retailers currently offer drone services. Another 25% of retailers are “farming” this work out to other companies. Of the ag retailers that do offer such services, only 9% say the services are profitable.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Unprofitable, Impractical&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;The problem is this: expecting today’s class of drones to operate effectively and efficiently is like asking a 2,500-acre-farmer to go out and harvest his crop with a John Deere 45 combine from the 1950s.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The FAA needs to get out of the way and allow drones to get bigger, smarter and more capable in the field of agriculture. The agency is starting to show it can do this for other industries, such as air transportation. In October, the FAA published 880 pages of special regulations, which will allow drone transportation companies to start flying people in their “air taxis” around city skylines.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It’s time our industry recognizes drones as serious tools in the agronomic toolbox instead of just “cool” toys for farmers. And if our government is so concerned about our national security that it needs to take away our Chinese toys, then it needs to open doors to better alternatives by clearing the regulatory and economic paths to allow for bigger, faster “Made in the USA” drones and services to rule our skies and fly over our farmland.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
