The sheer size of Agritechnica – with more than 2,300 exhibitors from 46 countries – makes it a perfect place to take a global pulse of the machinery industry. Dozens of executives agreed to confidential interviews and spoke candidly about the machinery market and possible business mergers.

Agritechnica opened for a special preview day on Sunday with more than 2,000 exhibits sprawling in 18 halls at the Hannover fairground. While it is impossible to see everything in one day, two mammoth tractors were show-stoppers and had even those who hadn't seen them talking about the machines. The two – the Deutz Agro XXL and the new Claas Xerion 5000 – were both unveiled to the public at the show.

It must have been a dirty job and the Fendt had to do it – from the looks for the Fendt 936 on display at the Agritechnica show in Hanover, Germany. It is the first tractor on a show lot that has more dirt than Armor All in my 25 years of reporting on machinery.

It was concealed until Agritechnica's preview day, and it took a big sheet to cover Deutz-Fahr's XXL 1630. The eight-wheeled tractor was built as prototype by a partnership between the company and a German university.
