A recall of more than 30,000 lb. of ground beef has been implemented after the discovery of plastic and metal in beef from a Washington processing plant.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Feb. 28, that approximately 30,260 lb. of ground beef chubs products was recalled from Washington Beef, LLC, in Toppenish, Wash. The product is believed to have been contaminated with “extraneous materials, specifically hard plastic and metal.”

The ground beef was produced on Dec. 27, 2018 and include a “Use or Freeze by” date of 01/20/19. It bears the establishment number “EST. 235” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped nationwide.

There are several branded products of various lean to fat ratios that fall under the recall including:

  • Double R Ranch Northwest Brand Beef
  • St. Helens Beef

The problem was not discovered until a consumer filed a complaint with the company on Feb. 28.

There were no other confirmed reports related to the case. Should anyone be concerned about injury or illness they are advised to contact a healthcare provider.

The recall has been issued because FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
