Meanwhile, beef packers saw their margins erode another $59 per head to average losses of $182 per head, according to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker.

Cash cattle averaged $189.26 per cwt. the week ending Mar. 30, while composite wholesale beef prices posted $2.96 per cwt. losses to close at $297.77 per cwt. The Beef and Pork Profit Trackers are calculated by Sterling Marketing, Vale, Ore.

The feeder steer price is 24% higher than last year.

The estimated total cost for finishing a steer last week was $2,478 per head, up 15% from last year’s estimate of $2,120 per head.
