Twedt Red Angus Named 2023 Breeder of the Year
As a fourth-generation rancher, Sam Twedt has cattle bred into him. It’s apparent in the quality of cattle at Twedt Red Angus, owned and operated by Sam and his wife, Emily, and their four children, and makes them the natural choice as this year’s Red Angus Breeder of the Year. The ranch, located in McHenry, North Dakota, was honored with this distinction during the 70th National Red Angus Association Convention held in Denver Sept. 13-15.
“Sam Twedt has done an outstanding job of developing a top Red Angus herd, and then marketing his bulls very well within his region,” said Red Angus Association of America Director Craig Bieber, who presented the award to the Twedts. “Commercial customers are well served by having good young breeders throughout the United States, and Sam epitomizes what a young breeder needs to do to be successful.”
Using embryo transfers and strict culling standards, Twedt Red Angus has rapidly improved their herd over the years and takes pride in producing sound cattle with good dispositions. Along with Samuel’s dad, they run roughly 450 commercial cows and 150 registered cows. This has grown from their foundation herd purchased in 2009 from Bar R Red Angus, which consisted of 73 head.
Fast forward to 2023, where they currently implant roughly 100 embryos a year, plus sell about 70 bulls and elite groups of heifers in their production sale each February. The sale offers other producers the opportunity to use the Twedt Red Angus maternal, yet easy-going, good-dispositioned cattle families in their own herds.
This dedication to growth and developing Red Angus genetics is what brought Twedt Red Angus to the association’s attention for the Breeder of the Year Award. Recognizing members who have contributed to and maintained an excellent quality of Red Angus cattle, the Breeder of the Year exemplifies a dedication to preserving and improving the Red Angus image and place in the cattle industry.
