Profit Tracker: Cattle, Hog Margins Near Steady

Average cattle feeding margins totaled $146 per head the first week of April, according to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker. That average was steady with the previous week, and $12 per head lower than a year ago. The Beef and Pork Profit Trackers are calculated by Sterling Marketing, Inc., Vale, Oregon.

Estimated beef packer margins for the first week in March were $324 per head, up $39 per head from the previous week, and down $163 from the same week a year ago. Last week’s Choice beef cutout averaged $271 per cwt., $5 per cwt. higher than the previous week and $16 per cwt. higher than the same week a year ago.

Last week’s calculations were based on 5-area fed cattle prices of $139.27 per cwt., about steady with the previous week, and up $16 per cwt. from last year. Feed costs for the cattle marketed last week averaged $452 per head, up $20 from the previous week and up $122 from last year.

Cattle slaughter totaled an estimated 676,000 head, up 37,000 head from the previous week and up 147,000 head from last year. Packing plant capacity utilization was estimated at 90.3% compared to 85.4% the previous week and 71.7% last year.

Farrow-to-finish hog producers found profits of $65 per head last week, down $6 per head from the previous week and down $15 per head from last year. Lean carcass prices averaged $103.97 per cwt., down $4.32 from the previous week and up $23.89 from last year.

Pork packer margins were estimated at a loss of $7.54 per head, which compares to losses of $14.63 the previous week and a profit of $7.73 per head last year. Hog slaughter was estimated at 2.43 million head, down 4,000 head from the previous week and up 38,000 head from last year.

Pork packer capacity utilization was estimated at 88.3% compared to 88.5% the previous week and 85.0% last year.
