An early season barometer of rancher optimism and demand for high-quality bulls, Gardiner Angus Ranch sold 280 bulls on Monday at an average of $7,158 per head.

Long-time GAR sale observers suggest a typical sale reflects the current and longer-term market signals relative to the cow-calf sector. That ranchers anticipate 2022 will usher in stronger calf prices was evident in the first of Gardiner’s four annual sales.

More than 228 bidders competed during the 5th Annual “Early Bird” Bull Sale for 280 GAR bulls that, on average, ranked in the top 5% of the Angus breed for marbling, top 4% for $Beef, top 5% for $Combined, top 18% for growth and 26% for calving ease. The average of the offering ranked in the top 10% of Method Genetics (MG) Retained Ownership Index.

Lot 1, GAR Incentive sold to commercial producer Doey Messer, Messer Cattle Co., Soldier, Kan., at $46,000. Second high selling bull was Lot 3, GAR Home Town 5460, purchased by Randall Grimmius, Grimmius Cattle Co., Hanford, Calif. for $25,000.

Seventy-three head of bred commercial heifers sold for $168,850 to average $2,313 per head.

Overall, the sale totaled $2,173,100.
