Hulett: Feeders Hold Market Steady
Cattle feeders in the South were able to hold their market steady at $119. Kansas saw a good trade with participation from all packers. Texas had more difficulties getting cattle moved to all four major packers. Cattle feeders in the South continue to need a couple more weeks for good trade volume before they have any shot at being able to push the live market higher.
Feeders in the North saw some of their market slip away in certain areas. The cash trade was mostly $120-$122 and dressed cattle bringing $192-$196. Cattle feeders in the West were under a little more pressure to get cattle moved. Feeders in the East appear to be in the driver’s seat with inventories of market ready cattle to be in short supply.
Harvest numbers continue to be less than ideal for what the industry needs at this time. Packers continue to have issues with workers showing up for all scheduled shifts. Feeders will need to continue to keep cattle moving as much as possible, with grass cattle beginning to start their arrival at feed yards at anytime.
