Firefighters were called to Cargill Meat Solutions’ beef plant near Dodge City shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

The Dodge City fire chief said crews from Ford County and Dodge City quickly extinguished the fire which was on the roof on the rendering side of the plant. They found fire in the ventilation system.

The chief told reporters some workers were welding and a spark caught some grease on fire. One person was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation but is expected to recover.

Officials said the damage to the plant is minor and should have no impact on operations. The facility has a daily kill capacity of 5,200 head per day.
