There’s full seating for three, roomy cabin dimensions and improved air intake system in the new 2014 Viking side by side vehicle from Yamaha Motor Corporation.

The 2014 Viking and Viking EPS models are powered by a 686cc, liquid-cooled, fuel injected SOHC engine to deliver strong low-end acceleration while pulling hard through the rpm range. Top speed is 50 mph.

"This is the most comfortable and off-road capable vehicle in its class based in large part on feedback from farmers and ranchers, who asked for a rugged, high-capacity utility vehicle that is also comfortable and fun to drive," said Mike Martinez, vice president of Yamaha’s ATV/Side-by-side Group. "The all-new Viking is the only side-by-side to offer true three-person seating capacity with other features that farmers and ranchers want like electric power steering and enough cargo capacity to hold a fully-loaded pallet."

That work mentality is evident in the Viking’s industry-exclusive three-position On-Command four wheel drive system lets riders dial between two-wheel drive, limited-slip four-wheel drive and fully locked differential four-wheel drive. An automatic centrifugal clutch maintains constant belt tension for reduced belt wear and uses a sprag clutch for all-wheel downhill engine braking in four-wheel drive mode and reverse.

Key to the Viking’s engine performance is a large-capacity air intake system that helps prevent overheating and assists in keeping water and debris from entering the drive case.

The electric power steering is powered by a separate motor for precision and dampens steering feedback when you encounter terrain obstacles. Exclusive to the Viking are four Maxxis Big Horn 2.0 tires.

While the Viking appeals to many demographics, crop farmers will appreciate the overall machine width’s to minimize row crop damage and 11.8" ground clearance.

Livestock farmers will also appreciate the tough, rotomolded doors that help keep mud, water and dirt out of the vehicle and a 1,500 lb. tow capacity.

All riders will enjoy a roomier cabin, lower seat height and the pass-thru cab design for easy enter and exit. The Viking also has 40 all new accessories for riders to customize their side-by-side, including a bed rail system and windshield to full cab enclosure.

Game changer

New products are not all that is changing for Yamaha. The company has also completed production transfer of all 4x4 ATVs and side by sides for worldwide distribution to Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation (YMMC) in Newnan, Ga.

More than $250 million has gone into the 875,000 sq. ft. factory expansion and upgrade. Current ATV lines will be assembled here, as well as the new Viking.
