A steer won't be New York strips for at least one day after escaping a slaughterhouse in the City That Never Sleeps.

Videos and photos are making their way across the internet after a Hereford steer fled the Jamaica Archer Live Poultry and Meat Market in the Jamaica Queens neighborhood of New York on Thursday.

The steer ran through traffic, past stores and lots of people recording the incident on smart phones.

Officers with the New York Police Department 103rd Precinct managed to rope the steer and load it into a stock trailer.

The steer is still slated to be processed through the hala meat packer on Friday.

The local police precinct took to social media and shared the roundup on Twitter:

Reports from various news outlets say it was a “cow” running loose, but watching video from the scene it is clear there’s a sheath between this bovine’s legs. See for yourself:

The escaped steer had us recalling western-comedies from the 1990s that incorporated life in the big city with ranching.

We’re guessing the police didn’t “have a roping disability” like Billy Crystal in City Slickers. However, we doubt the officers could team rope as well as Woody Harrelson and Kiefer Sutherland in The Cowboy Way.

For their efforts someone should probably give the police a few steak dinners after the steer is processed:
