AgriTalk: Not What the RFS Was Meant For
You can go ahead and count former U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) among those that are not happy with Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS) waivers granted by EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt.
“Mr. Pruitt made it very clear, before he was appointed to the EPA ,that he doesn’t like renewable fuels, and doesn’t think we should have a renewable fuels industry,” said Dorgan.
Dorgan, and former U.S. Sen. Jim Talent (R-MO), signed a letter urging Congress to investigate the waivers.
“I am so please that this industry has been so successful, but we can’t stop here and we don’t want anyone in EPA or anyone elsewhere to stunt the growth of such an exciting industry,” said Dorgan
Dorgan told host Chip Flory that something needs to be done, and that Pruitt needs to realize who he works for.
“The President came to Iowa and said he was very supportive of renewable fuels,” said Dorgan, “I think he has appointed some people, like Mr. Pruitt, that don’t like renewable fuels. I hope the president takes a look at that and will say ‘you know what, listen up straighten up, I made a promise to grow this industry’.”
Also joining Thursday’s AgriTalk was Kevin Kester, President of the National Cattleman’s Beef Association (NCBA). The organization is celebrating Beef Month with the weather warming up and the Memorial Day holiday just around the corner.
He told Flory about their efforts to monitor NAFTA negotiations and what the NCBA is doing to battle “fake meat” this year.
Jackie Allenbrand, founder of Pharmdog, laid out her organization’s work to help farmers with trained working dogs. Pharmdog’s PSAs can be heard regularly on AgriTalk and AgriTalk After The Bell. Allenbrand tells Flory the organization helps match farms with disabilities or injuries to dogs through their program that can help fit their needs.
More information about the group can be found at Pharmdog.org
