Drovers TV: Packers Requiring BQA Certification for Truckers

Truck drivers who haul fed cattle to Tyson and Cargill packing plants will soon need to complete the Beef Quality Assurance Transportation certification program. Tyson wants all truck drivers to have the BQA certification by January 1, 2020, and Cargill says it is committed to having 90% of its drivers BQA certified by the end of this year.
As of October 31, more than 1,670 certifications had been completed with more than 2,400 enrollments in process.
Tyson Foods spokesman Gary Mickelson says “Consumers and customers want to know more about the beef they buy and additional assurance that cattle producers are doing what’s right for the animals they raise.” The company says they will require BQA Transportation certification of all transporters delivering cattle to their facilities by Jan. 1, 2020.
Cargill spokesman Lacey Alexander said the company supports both the BQA and BQA Transportation because they believe it provides more transparency to consumers about how cattle are handled and cared for.
