USDA says there were 469 million pounds of beef in cold storage at the end of July. That is up 2.8% from the month before and up 2.0% from the same date last year. This is the most beef in storage for any month since February and the most for any July since 2006.

USDA's August Cattle on Feed report said the number of cattle on feed on August 1 was the most for any August since 2012. July placements were up 1.6% and included a lot of heavy cattle. The calculated average weight for cattle placed on feed has consistently been above the year-ago level for the last 24 months.

The average steer dressed weight for the week ending on August 13 was 887 pounds, up 1 pound from the week before, down 13 pounds from a year ago, and below the year-ago level for the 15th week in a row.

USDA's weekly crop progress report said that 18% of U.S. pastures were in poor or very poor condition on August 21. That is up 1 point from the week before and up 2 points from a year ago.
