Monday Market Sentiment: 5-Area cattle price declines

After a rally during the first week of 2016 to $134.04 per hundredweight, the 5-Area Accumulated Average Cattle Price dropped to $132.30 per hundredweight.

The panel of cattle industry experts who make up our Monday Market Sentiment were over optimistic with a prediction of $135.52 per hundredweight. This week, they lowered their estimation to $132.40 per hundredweight.

Choice boxed beef made huge increases throughout the week, starting Jan. 5 at $222.31 per hundredweight, and ending Jan. 11 on $235.32 per hundredweight. The increase moved the 27-day average to $206.67 per hundredweight.

Each week the Cattle Trader Center, on behalf of Merck Animal Health, awards a $100 gift certificate from Cabela's to the industry leader whose forecast comes closest to the 5-Area cash trade number reported by the USDA. The most recent winner was Mike Drinnin.
