Farm Journal’s PORK and Drovers were recognized for editorial excellence in the Livestock Publications Council contest at the 2019 Ag Media Summit July 30 in Minneapolis.
PORK Editor Jennifer Shike received first place in the non-association feature/human interest category for her article, Never Surrender: Scott Dee Goes to Battle to Protect U.S. Swine Herd. The judge praised the story as an interesting article from start to finish, writing, “The writer caught my attention with her lead and kept it. I liked how this article wrapped up.”
Shike was also elected to the Livestock Publications Council’s Board of Directors at the meeting.
Drovers won first place in the news category for “Great News” and “Missed Opportunities” in U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Author Sara Brown’s work was recognized for its factual approach. “Excellent job with this topic. A news story should be just that and not show opinions from the author. Nice work on this one,” the judge wrote.
Drovers was also recognized with a second-place award in the non-association feature/human interest category for Securing Border Ranches. The judge recognized Author Wyatt Bechtel’s writing style with this feedback: “Kudos to this writer for knowing when to use a direct quote and having a writing style that isn’t a predictable rhythm. Extremely interesting feature article.”
