Opening and closing gates in high-traffic areas can waste a lot of time. Bridgewater, Iowa, rancher Evan Rayl estimates the cattle guards he built for his ATV saves an hour a day during the two-month-long calving season. Mr. Rayl built his first ATV cattle guard more than 10 years ago using 2-by-12s. The second ATV cattle guard he built using metal rather than wood. He built this guard 1 foot wider to accommodate his calf carrier with cage. The ramps on one side have heavy, expanded metal welded under the cleats to prevent cattle from catching their feet between the cleats. Much of the steel in this unit was scrap or used material. He estimates there was only about $50 of new or used purchased material in the metal ATV guard.
