Stocker/feeder cattle steady to $3 higher
By Drovers news staff  |  Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Stocker and feeder cattle were called steady to $3 higher last week compared to the previous week at auctions across the nation. Supplies of cattle were light due to the Fourth of July holiday, and receipts were 35 percent below the same week a year ago. Last week’s receipts were 112,800, compared with 175,700 the same week last year.

Fed cattle prices were steady to $1.50 higher, with cash prices at $91 to $93. Analysts note that fed cattle supplies remain very manageable for this time of year and are projected to remain below year-ago levels over the next several weeks. The market also saw a boost from what was termed a “better-than-average” movement of beef over the Fourth of July weekend.

Feeder steers weighing 700 to 800 pounds sold at auction at $110 to $119 per hundredweight last week, with the bulk of cattle at $112 to $114. Steer calves weighing 400 to 500 pounds sold at $122 to $138 per hundredweight, with the bulk of calves at $130 to $133.
