Industry loses influential pioneer

Swain William (Bill) House, 93, of Arkansas City, Kan., died March 8 at his home. House ranched in Cowley and Chautauqua Counties, with headquarters at Cedar Vale. His leadership in the cattle industry included serving as president of the Kansas Livestock Association, 1964-65; president of the American Hereford Association, 1964; and president of the American National Cattlemen’s Association, 1968-69.

As ANCA president, House helped make the decision to form CattleFax in 1968. House joined KLA in 1947 and was honored for belonging to KLA 50 years and 60 years. He most recently attended the 2008 KLA Convention in Wichita and the 2009 Cattle Industry Convention in Phoenix.

House graduated from Cedar Vale high school in 1933. After graduating from Arkansas City Junior College, House earned his bachelor’s degree in 1937 and his law degree in 1939 from the University of Kansas.
